Inspirational leadership and foresight in Xenophon’s Cyropaedia

Looking back at 2024, it has without doubt cast a heavy shadow on the upcoming year, by bestowing on it a general sense of unease and uncertainty, affecting almost every aspect of human activity. Taking this into consideration, the call for wise, virtuous, creative, responsible, proactive (and possibly disruptive) leadership at every level (be it political, economic or military) probably matters more than ever before. Leadership that is meant to provide for the common good, the good of the people, of all people without exceptions. For virtuous leadership creates virtuous populaces.

In the, academic and experiential, effort to offer reliable and viable suggestions to the current administrative challenges with a focus on the common good, the courses on "Classical Management and Administration" (undergraduate and graduate), that I have the pleasure of teaching with Professor Dimitrios Thomakos, strive to showcase every useful bit of classical administrative theory that is nowadays neglected. However, it appears that most of this theory has withstood the relentless passing of time and has thus been proven worthy of restoring to immediate prominence. "Attention needs to be called periodically to important old truths", as the revered polymath and Nobel laureate Herbert A. Simon once wrote - and important old truths are mighty strong for virtuous and inspirational leadership. In this same spirit, of old but important truths, we contemplate on Cyrus the Great enlightened leadership, as masterly crafted and presented in Xenophon's Cyropaedia. There, Cyrus is portrayed as a visionary leader, determined to bring groundbreaking change to the status quo of his era. Yet, in order to share his vision with his followers, and subsequently carry out the corresponding mission, he must inspire all those surrounding him.

Enjoy the presentation below, with a cured selection from the original text and reflect on the mandates of classical management and compare them with current leaders and leadership approaches around the world. May the new year bring those that the people have chosen to lead closer to the classical, and never failing, ideals of inspirational leadership.
